Kalka Shimla Railway

The story of the Kalka Shimla Railway is interesting. And the journey to the hills on this Toy Train is really interesting. It was in 1847 when a journalist had made a sketch of railway trek in these hills. After making several surveys the actual construction was initiated on 30th April 1898. The project included the construction of twenty railway stations, one hundred and seven tunnels, initially, nine hundred bridges, a similar number of curves, and three S-bends. All that work, by bringing all the material that included, rail treks, communication system, signaling system, rolling stock, locomotives, and the bridges, was completed in five years and six months. It was 9th November 1903 when the first train was flagged off by Lord Curzon from Kalka to Shimla.

Mountain The railway track from Kalka to Shimla was laid by the British, during the Raj, in 1903. In May 1864, Shimla had already become the Summer Capital of British India and after that, here came the month of March and the whole government started moving up to the hills. The biggest challenge was to carry all the required paraphernalia.
